Platform Beds and Headboards

My sister and brother-in-law are building a house near Lake Michigan!  It is scheduled to be ready soon so I have been busy making some furniture for her.  Beds are top on the priority list because a place to sleep is a good thing :)

This past winter I made a headboard for one of my bedrooms to practice:

I like they way it turned out and here it is in the bedroom:

So, for the cottage we wanted platform beds high enough off the floor to put a suitcase under the bed!
So with a little inspiration from Ana White and Pottery Barn Mason Headboard I got to work.  I made the same style platform for both beds and changed up the headboards just a bit!  As for the cost - I spent way less on everything than the cost of one headboard at Pottery Barn :)

My sister bought bright quilts for the beds so we did a white wash in the open slatted bed and stained the other.

The third bedroom is going to have twin beds so we painted some old headboards and a bookcase a bright color to go with the navy and orange quilts!!

  2. Hi Gretchen!
Awesome headboard! Did you by chance use a Kreg Jig to build it? Thanks for your reply!

    1. I sure did. I use my Kreg Jig for all my building projects. Couldn't build without it!

  4. Gretchen,

Any chance you have a supply list for the bed. I like the closed headboard with the horizontal boards. I think I could probably build this and I KNOW my husband could if he had the time. Thanks, in advance, for any guidance. I love the bed!!!

  5. Jennifer,

I have to give all the credit to Ana White. You can find the plans for this headboard and lots of other furniture on her blog. Here is the link to the headboard. http://ana-white.com/2010/03/plans-mason-headboard-its-all-in-finish.html I know you can build this and it is so much fun!

Thanks for stopping by the blog!

  6. Do you use a pre-stain conditioner when you stain? Which color stain did you use? I'm assuming that you finished with Minwax Polycrylic? Do you use the satin finish or semi-gloss? Love these so much, going to attempt one for our spare bedroom!

    1. Jamie and Garett,

I do use a pre-stain conditioner most of the time. I used Behr "Dark Denim" Paint on the first headboard. I used watered down white paint as a wash on the white headboard and I used Minwax Aged Oak Gel Stain on the brown wood headboard. The white washed and brown wood headboards are finished with Minwax Polycrylic in satin. Good luck with your headboard!
